Animation Sound Recording Day @ SomaTone Studios

Yesterday was a big day of sound recording awesomeness. I had a great turnout and amazing performances from a quick witted group of UBC Improvers. Nick Slackov, Sajan Gill, Trang Nyugen, Bradely Burgea, Allie Entwistle, and Harriet Jicama! It was an exhausting day, but so much fun.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the day! Enjoy!

Directing. Totally Candid.. no posing at all.. **shifty eyes**

These Bitchezz be fierce!
They demanded red M&M's but only ones with W's on them... so tough to work with :P

UBC Improv Team

This weekend I contacted UBC's Improv team and met with them after their hilarious Friday night show and got an enthusiastic response :)

I am excited to work with this talented group and hope they can bring some of their improvisational skills into my characters. I think recording with them will be a blast and will give me a lot of great footage to play around with.

Definitely check out one of their shows, at Neville Scarfe on Fridays at 7:00 for 3 bucks!

You can find all their information on their website:

Tension Charts

Here are two tension charts that I will use to help guide my film. One is modeled after an episode of HBO's GIRLS and the other represents the tension in my film.

I think my film reflects that of a Telivision episode as the tension is never completely resolved. It ends with a cliffhanger as if to be continued in another episode. This is why I decided to compare my film to an episode of HBO's Girls.  This episode also happens to be about the ending of a friendship and is similar in both theme and tone.

My tension chart is similar to that of episode 9 of Girls. It is clear that My film begins and ends with an energetic quick pace outside of the living room party space. Most of the action takes place within the party in the living room, and these actions are fairly constant. The most significant variants in pacing and mood peaks occur when the characters are outside of the living room environment. I am pleased with this chart as it hooks the viewer at the beginning, peaks interest in the middle and ends with tension that is only released/ partially resolved at the very last moment of the film. I hope that this keeps the viewer hooked and interested throughout the film.

Music!

Today I met up with local sound designer Michael Winters, who works at SomaTone interactive in Yaletown. I am very excited to work with Michael, as he has experience with animation scores and sound effects. I am completely lost when it comes to sound and professional recording so I am feeling rather relieved. I am going for a cheesy pop/clubbing music vibe. Something that my character Becky would play at her house party, but the challenge will be making sure it is not too distracting with the heavy dialogue in my film.

I will have to help him out with some album artwork or business card designs to return the favour. We will be meeting again next weekend to go over the animatic.

Film Maps

In order to organize the choreography of the characters in my film I have created a series of  'film maps' for every scene in my script. The serve as a blueprint for my storyboards. Hopefully this will help better prepare me for my third animatic attempt.

Deleted Scenes

So, I have decided to eliminate Fitz, my original main character, from the film. It was great working with him, but he isn't quite the right fit for the story overall. Here are some of his shining moments.

Enjoy :)

Building My Dollhouse Set

My set has been created using a variety of materials and many trips to The Little Dollhouse Company in Toronto. I constructed the majority of this set over the summer and had a blast doing so. As a 21 year old, my friends felt a little concerned for my mental health when confronted with my enthusiasm over miniatures and dollhouse pieces. I hope my set is worth the damage to my social image.
